This stitch looks great whether it is crocheted in a solid color or made in different colors like a self striping yarn or even in striped rows. I love the look of it when it is worked up in a worsted weight yarn.

Is the Grit Stitch Easy to Crochet?

YES! It’s a super easy stitch pattern to remember and will add some variety to you skills. After the first row, the stitch pattern is made with a 1 row repeat row.

This is a great stitch to learn even if you are more of a beginner because it only involves 2 basic crochet stitches. The 2 basic stitches that it takes to make up the crochet grit stitch are single crochet stitches and double crochet stitches.

What Can You Make With the Grit Stitch?

The grit stitch creates a beautiful texture that is great for all kinds of things like –

I love to use a cotton yarn and work up a small square when learning a new stitch. This way when you are finished and have the stitch pattern down, you have a washcloth that you can use and something to show for your time learning that stitch.

How to Crochet the Grit Stitch

Skill Level: Easy

Things you will need:

Abbreviation / Stitch Key:

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch (es)
  • sk = skip
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sp = space
  • yo = yarn over
  • t = turn

To start the Grit Stitch

For this stitch, you will want the to start your foundation chain with any odd number of stitches. For this test swatch, I chained 19 stitches (I did 29 stitches for a washcloth I made)

Row 1: dc in the 3rd chain stitch from hook (2 skipped chain st counts as a sc), *skip next ch, work 1 sc and 1 dc in the next st*, repeat * to * across to last 2 ch. Skip the next ch, sc in the last chain

Row 2: ch 1 (counts as a sc), t, 1 dc in 1st st, *skip next st, work 1 sc and 1 dc in the next st*, repeat * to * across to last 2 st, skip next st, sc in the last stitch (which will be your turning chain from the previous row)
