I recently thought I would try a joystick on MWO as this is how i played MW4, with a joystick/mouse combo with only a few commands on the keyboard. Interested to hear who else is doing this and how you feel about it.

    I'm using a Logitech extreme 3d Pro with a Belkin Nostromo N52te.

    Loving it.

Have pitch and torso on the JS and turning on the thumbpad of the Nostromo.

I might try it out now that they reportedly have them working ok. I played with a joystick in all the previous games, though I'm used to mouse and keyboard now.

it's taken me about an hour to get the hang of using it, it's not too bad at all.. I'm just using a $15 logitech attack 3 for throttle and turning the mech itself. Reticule aiming and weapon firing still via the mouse. I've noticed the axis are quite fluid and turn proportionate to the amount of input, and with the new throttle decay, stopping and reversing (especially in a spider trying to avoid gauss rounds) is far easier

I have found that I do a good job with my wireless trackball mouse and my keyboard. It gives me quick and precise aiming and movement controls. DISCLAIMER: All bad piloting and **** poor aiming are due to old arthritic hands.

I'm on HOTAS and have been since around Oct but this poll is flawed and I can't cast a vote since your options exclude people using kbm emulators to interface with MWO (provides a degree of control needed to not merely have a stick work, but actually work well). Everyone with a Thrustmaster Cougar, Warthog, or T16000 falls into the same category, plus anyone using Steel Batallion controllers and a host of other analog devices that MWO is compatible with to limited degrees.

I constructed my own stick just for mech piloting, since an aircraft stick is very poorly suited for this purpose (I'll list the reasons if you haven't seen my rant about it already...). By using an emulator based program to interface, it puts things like sensitivity control in my own hands so not only does it not require .cfg mods to effect changes, I can accomplish changes on the fly and have a dual (tri actually) sensitivity stick at the push of a button, just like any mouse worth it's weight, in addition to the ability to have complex control over all the normal digital events (from toggles to macros... and everything in between). I also use absolute inputs, have no deadzones, no spring return and no detents so my stick is quite the anomaly for the time being. All in game functions are on HOTAS, but kbm remain active and can be used along with or instead of, at any point as needed...

Same setup except I use the older n52 - much fun to use. I do all turning/movement/torso with the JS, sensitivity at 83% speed on the d-pad (actually, just w=forward, a=stop, s=reverse, d=half speed) and controls on the various n52 buttons

I can't get the same level of accuracy and speed for aiming with my joystick vs a mouse, but I *have* found a throttle to be a fantastic control. I use the G700 mouse from Logitech with the throttle part of the Hotas X from Thrustmaster. Works like a charm Who Is Using A Joystick In Mwo? (72)

Was using JS since MW2-MW4M, but in MWO it feels too sluggish and inaccurate. Used a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Maybe I just need to adjust sensitivity on the stick, but didn't jack with it. Kept to mouse and keyboard. Seems more fitting on this game, but the younger mechwarrior me keeps yelling at me.

I'm using the throttle of a Thrustmaster T HOTAS X. It has a rudder control on the back, so throttle and turning are all left hand, along with assigned buttons. Right hand is a Cyborg RAT 7 MMO mouse, plenty of buttons, so I never have to lift either hand. Just can't beat the targeting with the mouse, and the throttle with fwd & reverse on one axis is a *huge* game changer.
Others I know are trying out rudder pedals for turning, which may be even better for that.

has anyone else been unable to assign certain functions to their joystick (other functions work on these buttons - i tested it). THese are just a couple i can think of...

Centre Feet to current View - F
Arm Lock Toggle - Left Shift
          ECM mode Toggle - J

WardenWolf - how are you steering? is your left hand using throttle and keyboard?

Defcon Won - I so want to try some rudders for steering.. just can't justify it to the wife.

Raven Mad Cat - oh the nostalgia when i drop using a stick make it worth the while.

ECM mode toggle assignment *used* to work, but as of the last two patches it seems broken for me as well Who Is Using A Joystick In Mwo? (94) I haven't tried the other two you listed, but I suspect the same thing is probably affecting all three. Lets both submit bug requests, try to get their attention Who Is Using A Joystick In Mwo? (95)

As for steering, the throttle I have has a rocker on the front side where my fingers rest. I use it, and as of a couple patches ago it is now analog as well - so you can turn either fast or slow, as needed, I find that is far superior to the keyboard, but using the same hand fingers as you would for ASDW (left hand, since I'm right-handed and use the mouse with that hand).

            mine also did this.

Plug the usb in. Then start MWO after the PC has recognised the joystick.

then set analogue turn & analogue throttle as joystick.

not turn left or turn right.

got a response from my ticket about joystick key mapping not working..

            --- snip---

The problem you have encountered is a known issue and we hope to have it fixed soon.
This ticket is now considered to be closed, however this does not mean that we consider the issue resolved as bugs are tracked in a separate database.

I did NOT have the same issue when I first started playing. My analog throttle control defaulted to j0_slider0, and analog turn to j0_axis_x.

torso twist is j0_rot_z and pitch is j0_axis_y.

I use the Logi software to adjust sensitivity.

odd the game is that fickle

              never got to the game

              i have a ms sidewinder ff 2

it ask for conformation every freakn time i want to remap a key.....
and when I try to remap, turn left and turn right to joystick x-axis
it can only map, left turn or right turn to joystick X-Axis not both

cmon this is basic 101 programming....if you cant (or dont want ) people to use a joystick either do it right
or leave it out...I can only imange how the game operates now....

I had so much fum playing mech warriors, I would show my friends the opening scene..it looked like a movie trailer

maybe it's good I didn't play the game

and wreck my image of a game I loved...

I also have a sidewinder, but because it and Win 7 are not friendly, I got the Logitech noted above. Inexpensive (ATM under $30 on newegg), works just as well (I never liked the FF) and less headache. That sidewinder is really too old at this point and only seems to work well in Virtual XP. Bishop Steiner (a poster in the forums) may be able to help, he has that JS.
