This quick and simple crochet pattern will teach you how to make a stylish hexagon tote – using only two hexagons and 1 rectangle for the side. Embellished with beautiful butterflies and premade handles for a functional and practical tote.

Crochet bags are the perfect stylish accessory for the crochet enthusiast who is also a fashionista. Similar to my granny hexagon bag, you can make them in all different styles, colors, and sizes to complement every outfit. This specific pattern uses just four pieces – two hexagons and one rectangle – to form a beautiful and useful bag with ample space for all of your belongings. When you are finished, you can embellish it with various sizes of butterfly appliques or anything else that suits your style.

This hexagon tote bag is not only gorgeous but also practical. It’s made using the sc thermal stitch to provide texture and durability. If you have never used it, I have provided a video tutorial that covers all the essentials of this stitch. So even beginners should be able to master it!

Customizing Your Butterfly Hexagon Bag

There are so many ways to customize this fun project and make it your own. Depending on your choice of yarn and colors, you can significantly influence the overall aesthetic of this versatile design to make it appropriate for various activities. Make this crochet hexagon tote in a fun, bright color to take to the beach or in classic black for date night. You could also use it on a shopping spree in place of plastic bags.

Although my sample calls for worsted yarn and a 5.5 mm hook, you could experiment with a different yarn weight to change the size of the bag. For example, you could try bulky yarn to make a larger bag. Or size down to make a smaller bag.

For my bag, I glued various-sized butterflies into my bag. It provides a beautiful aesthetic without much extra work. Just a few dots of hot glue and you’re good to go! So if you wanted to add different designs, the choice is yours! Add flowers, dragonflies or even bumblebees to make your bag unique!

And of course, you may like to embellish it in a different way. You could add any number of appliques. Or if you’re going for a sleek and simple look, you don’t have to add any decoration at all.

You’ll finish it off by adding pre-made bag handles. Some possible bag handles you can buy are bamboo, metal, or beaded handles. Really, you are only limited by your creativity!

How to Crochet the Butterfly Hexagon Bag

Materials you will need

• Premier Yarns “Just Yarn Value” (worsted acrylic):
  • Lemon (½ skein)
• 5.5mm Crochet Hook -> I used Furls Crochet Hook
  • use NICKI15 for 15% off
• scissors
• tapestry needle
• plastic canvas for stability
• 4 rings
• Short leather bag straps
• Butterflies Iron-on
• Hot Glue

Gauge

6 sts x 3 rounds = 2 square inches

Size

13 x 13 inches (5 inches thick)

Free Pattern for the Crochet Butterfly Hexagon Bag

Pattern Notes

First, you’ll crochet 2 hexagons and then the one bag side before sewing all of the hexagons together and add the rings and straps at the end on the top.

2 Hexagons

R1: MR, 12 dc into ring

All first DC stitches are ATC

R2: *[1 dc,1 tr, 1 dc] in first st (this is the first corner), 1 dc inc in next st. Repeat from * 6 times. (30 sts), sl st

R3: 1 dc, *[1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc] in next tr, 4 dc, Repeat from * 5 times. Then, [1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc] in next tr, 3 dc. (42 sts)

R4: *1 dc in each st until you hit the corner tr stitch, place 1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc] into the tr st, repeat from * all around

Repeat R4 five more times.

1 Bag Side

R1: ch 16, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc per ch (8 sts), sl st

R2: 1 sc thermal st per st, turn

Repeat R2 until each long rectangle fits around 5 sides of the hexagon (mine was 168 rows (counted both sides of the thermal crochet piece).

Butterfly Crochet Hexagon Bag Assembly

Sew the long rectangle (side of the bag to give it thickness and space inside) between the 2 hexagons (like the image above). Optionally add plastic canvas with lining on the inside.

Sew the 4 rings (2 on each side) to the bag and attach the leather purse straps (or crochet straps).

Finishing Touches

Optionally hot glue butterflies and flowers to the front of the bag.
