Decorate the Unicorn Valentine Box

Steps 6: Using your wire cutters, cut off the heads of the flowers from the stems. You can use scissors, but they may not be strong enough to cut through some stems.

Step 7: Using a glue gun, attach the flowers to the box, in front of the card slot. You can try to use glue, but I have found the flowers tend to fall off using white school or glue sticks.

Step 8: Cut out your horn and ears from template sheets. Open one of your gift bags and trace and cut the horn and set it aside. Open the second gift bag and trace and cut the large unicorn ears and set them aside. Trace and cut the small unicorn ears onto the felt or construction paper and set aside.

Step 9: Trace and cut the large unicorn ears onto the 8×10″ piece of cardboard BUT extend an extra 1” at the bottom and set them aside. The extra 1″ tab will allow you to glue the ears onto the box.

Step 10: Using your glue gun or glue, attach the large unicorn ears you cut from the gift bag to the unicorn ears you cut from the cardboard. Using your glue gun or glue, attach the small unicorn ears to the large unicorn ears.

Insights, advice, suggestions, feedback and comments from experts

As an expert in DIY crafts and a parent of unicorn-loving children, I am delighted to share with you a step-by-step guide on creating a magical unicorn Valentine card box. This easy and affordable project will surely make your little girl's Valentine's Day extra special. Let's dive into the details!

To begin, gather the following supplies:

  • 1 small cardboard box
  • 1 8×10" piece of cardboard
  • White wrapping paper
  • Pastel curling ribbon
  • 2 gold (or any unicorn-appropriate colored) gift bags
  • Pink felt or construction paper
  • Faux flowers
  • Packing tape and/or scotch tape
  • Glue Gun and/or school glue/glue stick
  • Wire cutters
  • Scissors
  • Black marker
  • 2 small paperclips
  • Free unicorn horn and ears template (which you can find online)

Now, let's move on to the instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cardboard Box:

    • Tape the bottom of the cardboard box closed to ensure stability.
    • Turn the box upside down so that the opening becomes the top.
    • Fold the two smaller flaps on the left and right sides into each side of the box, then secure them with tape to the inner walls.
    • Cut about 5/8" off from each of the two remaining flaps. Tape these flaps in place to create a card slot.
    • Wrap the entire box in white wrapping paper, just like you would wrap a present.
    • Use scissors to carefully cut out the opening of the box that the wrapping paper has covered.
  2. Decorate the Unicorn Valentine Box:

    • Use wire cutters to remove the heads of the faux flowers from the stems. If necessary, scissors can be used instead.
    • With a glue gun, attach the flowers to the front of the card slot. Glue sticks or white school glue may not provide enough adhesive strength for this step.
    • Cut out the unicorn horn and ears from the template sheets. Trace and cut the horn from one of the gold gift bags, and set it aside. Open the second gift bag and trace and cut the large unicorn ears, then set them aside. Trace and cut the small unicorn ears onto the pink felt or construction paper, and also set them aside.
    • Trace and cut the large unicorn ears onto the 8×10" piece of cardboard, extending an extra 1" at the bottom. This extra tab will allow you to glue the ears onto the box securely.
    • Attach the large unicorn ears that you cut from the gift bag to the cardboard ears, using either a glue gun or glue. Then, attach the small unicorn ears to the large unicorn ears.
    • Roll the unicorn horn closed until it overlaps the edges, then secure it closed with glue. To prevent it from unrolling before the glue dries, use a paperclip at the top and bottom.
    • Attach the large unicorn ears to the back of the cardboard box using a glue gun or glue.
    • Finally, attach the unicorn horn to the top of the box, just behind the card slot, again using a glue gun or glue.
  3. Create the Unicorn "Mane":

    • Cut several 8-10" pieces of the pastel curling ribbon.
    • Using the edge of your scissors, curl each piece of ribbon.
    • Once you have a nice handful of unicorn "mane," gather them at the top and use one of the paperclips from Step 2 to hold them together.
  4. Finishing Touches:

    • Attach the unicorn "mane" just behind the flowers, creating one bunch on the left and one on the right side of the box.
    • Use a black marker to draw a face on the front of the box. If you have extra felt, you can even add some cute cheeks!

Now, your daughter's unicorn Valentine card box is complete! She can proudly take it to school to store the Valentine's Day cards she receives from her friends and classmates. Not only will she love showing it off, but she can also keep it as an adorable decoration in her room after Valentine's Day, allowing her to enjoy it all year long.

I hope this guide helps you and your daughter create a memorable and magical Valentine's Day experience. If you have a son, be sure to check out the rocket ship Valentine card box, which follows a similar process and also uses materials from the dollar store, making it a budget-friendly option.

Happy Valentine's Day!
